FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ABOUT OLD MILL BRICK

Most Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between Brickwebb and Thin Brick?

Thin Brick is real clay brick that is fired in a kiln just like full-sized brick. Some thin brick (referred to as Thin Brick Singles and Thin Brick Corners) is created by making a full-sized brick and slicing off the edge to create a thin brick. Another method involves extruting the clay into thin brick shapes, texturing, then firing it in a kiln. Both methods create beautiful and authentic thin brick that can be installed on existing surfaces - often in areas where full brick cannot be installed.

Brickwebb is a patented product unique to Old Mill Brick. The difference between Brickwebb and Thin Brick is the robust mesh-mounted system. Brickwebb comes as a mesh sheet with pre-mounted thin bricks for perfect alignment, accurate spacing, more robust adhesion and a quick installation. The main reason to use Thin Brick (Singles & Corners) is to create a pattern or design that is not available as a Brickwebb pattern. In most cases, Brickwebb is preferred to Thin Brick for its many advantages and improved quality of install.

  • What type of surface can I install Brickwebb and Thin Brick?

Thin Brick and Brickwebb can be installed on many different surfaces including unpainted drywall, painted drywall, plaster walls, backer board, hardie backer, cement walls or floor, wood (with special polymer fortified thin-set adhesive) and more. The type of adhesive to best use will vary based on where you are placing Brickwebb.

  • Can Brickwebb and Thin Brick we installed on a floor the same way as a wall?

For flooring surfaces, Brickwebb and Thin Brick is adhered to flooring and wall surfaces the same way; however, when grouting a floor you must use a sanded grout and a tile float instead of using mortar and a brick jointer. Mortar is not designed to take compression, and will crumble and crack easily under weight and foot traffic.

  • What type of adhesive should I use?

For an interior application over a substrate such as drywall, sheetrock, exterior-grade plywood or plaster (painted or unpainted), we recommend our Old Mill Adhesive. We add extra polymers to adhere it better than other modified thin-sets or mastics.  If you want a premixed adhesive, we would suggest a mastic for interiors and a modified thin-set for exteriors. They’re usually white and come premixed in a bucket and can be purchased from your local hardware store in the tile department.

For an exterior application over a substrate such as cement, backer-board or other like surfaces, use Old Mill Adhesive. Old Mill Adhesive is sold in a powder form and requires water and thorough mixing using a drill and mixing drill bit.

Note: Do not use Old Mill Adhesive to adhere Brickwebb directly to a wooden surface for exterior applications; always use a moisture barrier and follow your local building codes.

  • First, you will have to calculate the total square foot of your project. Do this by measuring the height and length of your project, then multiplying them together. (For example, a 8 ft wall that is 10 ft high would be 80 square feet). Next, when ordering Brickwebb or Thin Brick on oldmillbrick.com, there is a calculator which allows you to know how many square feet of product is being added to the cart.

Each Brickwebb Sheets box covers 8.7 sq. ft.
Each Thin Brick Singles box covers 7.3 sq. ft.

For corners you will need to calculate the total linear feet of the project. If the accent wall you are working on is 8ft high, and there are two corners, the total linear feet would be 8 ft + 8 ft = 16 linear feet.

Each Brickwebb Corners box covers with 5.3 linear feet
Each Thin Brick Corners box covers with 5.5 linear feet

Don't forget to add 10% of the total sqaure footage to the end result to ensure you have extra for miscuts or broken bricks.

  • What is Brickwebb?

Brickwebb is an award winning - patented thin brick product made from the highest quality real kiln-fired clay brick sliced into ½ faces. Several thin bricks are pre-mounted on a durable, fire resistant, fiberglass mesh with the brick already laid out and aligned for quick and easy installation. Brickwebb is the easiest and fastest method available to install thin brick for interiors or exteriors.

Brickwebb is available in pre-assembled flat sheets and corner sheets, with 30+ color blends to choose from, 8 of which are "tumbled brick", having a classic old world, aged, or weathered look and feel, and 26 of which "straight edge", made from the same brick but not tumbled. The straight edge provides a more uniform (flat and straight) appearance with less color and texture variation. Brickwebb comes in many patterns. Brickwebb Sheets is the original flat sheet that comes in the running bond pattern. Brickwebb Corners are installed on corners and match up to the sheets perfectly.

Brickwebb Herringbone is used to create a herringbone pattern and only comes as a flat sheet, there are no herringbone corners.

  • How do I ensure I like the color of my brick?

The colors you see online are representations of photographs of product samples, meaning you are seeing a representation of a representation. Each representation uses a slightly different color palette so you rarely get a true representation of color online. Even the actual color will vary based on brick batches and color blends of brick. Lastly dust and residue on brick and mortar or grout color will significantly impact the perceived color of the brick. Enjoy the unique color of your brick even though it won’t look the same as the pictures online.

We recommend buying a sample from our website. Each sample comes with 3-4 bricks depending on the collection. This will ensure you get a nice range of the color variation within each brick. If you still have questions about the colors feel free to call our customer service department or live chat in through the website. We are always here to help!

• What type of grout should I use?

There are primarily two types of grout you can use. Type S Mortar mix is the stardard type of grout. It comes in a limited number of colors (such a natural grey), it typically has a rougher, cement-like finish, and it is relitively easy to clean off the brick once its dry. Sanded grout (or sanded tile grout) is another option suitable for grouting thin brick. Sanded grout comes is a wider variety of colors, it has a smoother finish than mortar, and it seeps into the thin brick cracks making it more difficult to clean off of the surface of the brick once its dry. Mortar and sanded grout should only be used as grout, and are NOT suitable replacements for adhesive that is used to adhere thin bricks to your surface.

  • How much adhesive do I need?

When applying adhesive such as tile thin-set or tile mastic, cover the entire substrate using a 3/8" notch trowl. Generally, 50 lbs of adhesive will cover approximately 70 sq. ft. of thin brick.

  • How much grout do I need?

It depends on the project. A typical 80 lb bag should cover approximately 50 sq. ft. . We recommend checking on the bag or bucket that the grout comes in. There should be a chart telling you, based on the spacing between your bricks, how much grout is needed.
